Budapest M3 metro line reconstruction, station renovation
Nagyvárad tér Station
2016-2023

„The artwork ensemble in the station consists of two large mosaics and a series of images on the trackside metal sheets, designed by János Brückner between 2016 and 2023; and 4 large lamp shades by Márton Bojti.”

“The formerly bleak, cold, almost stressful world of the station, wedged between hospitals, has now been filled with warmth and calm, its empty spaces transformed into a free, airy space.”

„The basic concept of the renovation was to address two main problems.
It sought to rationalise the unfavourable space conditions and to alleviate the anxiety-ridden atmosphere, without reminding passengers of a hospital waiting room.”

„Visual artist János Brückner chose the palm as a basic motive, and also a partially open, supportive, helping, caressing or even handshake-like gesture, which is fundamentally connected to the body, and at the same time to the medical environment, while at the same time, seeing the hand, one associates it with protection and calm. The motive is composed of a system of five individual panels. This design offers flexibility, so that although the palm itself is the same everywhere, it can be placed on the wall in many variations and groupings. A neutral panel is also placed between each palm pattern, thus reducing the density of the motif. The pattern itself is created by perforating the sheet metal panels with seven different hole sizes.”

„Behind the artistically designed spaces, there are plenty of themes, strong messages and ideas related to the place, but it is certain that anyone who can still recall the former station will have a whole new impression of a station with big lights, which is much more „warm”.”

Memorial to the victims of the 2016 terrorist attack in Nice
Mosaic created in collaborative way
Paula-Fürst-Schule, Berlin, 2024

The 2016 terrorist attack in Nice killed two students and an accompanying teacher from the Paula-Fürst-Schule. I was commissioned to design a collaborative mosaic wall to complement their memorial in the school’s courtyard. Following the request of the school, I designed the mosaic in collaboration with the artist Juilieta Ortiz de Latierro. The design was based on ideas generated by the students and the pre-design was eventually completed by the students with their fracture mosaics during the school project week. In creating each surface, the students were free to implement their own ideas.
